It’s a question rarely asked in legal consultations, but for me, it’s essential.
A potential client entered my Zoom room today, visibly nervous—stumbling over her words, hesitant, carrying the weight of a story untold.
I could sense it: this was one of the first times she had engaged with an attorney. And yet, she was powerful—resilient, brilliant, a product of triumph over adversity.
Instead of diving straight into intellectual property protections, I paused. I shared my story.
I shared that I’m a proud first-generation everything—that I grew up in the projects of Brooklyn, NY, graduated summa cum laude, top 1% of my class at the University at Albany, and went on to earn my law degree from UC Berkeley.
I shared how I helped my mother navigate the New York public benefits system to get the food stamps and resources needed to support my non-verbal autistic brother.
For 20+ years, I’ve navigated two worlds—the world of my upbringing and the world of elite academic and financial spaces. And I’ve worked hard to stay true to my roots while also unpacking the complexities that come with them.
I navigated top law firms and federal clerkships with clients like her in mind. I knew I would always come back to my roots.
