Firm for the Culture | Loving Mothers Who Needed Mothering
This is a Firm for the Culture special. Let's get into it.
I don’t have the greatest relationship with my mom.
Dealing with the trauma of her own mother, my mother’s love has looked…well, different.
I used to see her fervent prayers as over-spiritualization of my situations when I needed pragmatic advice, but this has taught me to look to a higher power as the source of my strength and the strength of my life.
I used to think the way she loved was tougher than gravel on a sidewalk — rocky, hard, and likely to make me trip up.
But in that, I learned that she needed mothering just as much, if not more, than I did.
In turn, I introduced her to my own mentors, mother figures, sponsors, and community members so she could get the affection she never really had and so deeply needed.
My mother and I are not perfect.
Despite my success and litigation background, I still get scared to speak to her for fear that she may comment on my cooking skills or ask me when I am getting married, thereby driving me to a place of abject insecurity about whether I’m doing this “life” thing right.
But even then, I can’t help but admit she is the source of my resilience.
Of my determination.
Of my ability to get back up when life knocks me down.
And then to get up again.
And then again.

Much of Firm for the Culture’s longevity has lied in our ability to overcome the many “nos” life has thrown at us.
And before the court cases, legal briefs, and trademark disputes, much of the preparation for law and entrepreneurship has happened in the single parent household in Brooklyn, New York.
Where she raised me.
Nurtured me as best she could.
And prepared me for a world not designed for my light.
I am because she is.
So happy Mother’s Day, mom.
I hope this day envelopes you in the joys and love that you truly and unequivocally deserve.

Soo soo beautiful! Enjoyed this post very much. Praying for your continued success
This is so beautiful friend. It's the transparency for me! Your mom has a caring and talented daughter and I'd like to think that she knows that. I pray that you connect in deep ways this year.
