To the Black Girls Who Can’t Braid
Embrace Your Uniqueness and Defy Stereotypes | I Am What an Intellectual Property Attorney Looks Like.
Story time.
When I was a young Brooklynite, I constantly found myself at odds with the stereotypes around me.
As someone who was always a bit nerdy and dorky, I never quite felt like I fit the mold of what people expected a Black girl to be.
The unlimited books in the library, kind librarians, and the endless possibilities of reimagining my world played a crucial role in shaping my curiosity and drive.
Yet, despite my interests and abilities, I often heard the same refrain: “You’re not Black enough.”
In this founder’s letter, we’re going to provide tips crucial to embracing, nurturing, and protecting your uniqueness, as well as stewarding your beautiful contributions to the culture.

Understand that not fitting the mold is your strength.
The very qualities that make you different are the ones that will set you apart and make your contributions unique and valuable
When I was in high school, I sought out theater and the dramatic and performing arts so much so that I was awarded a spot in an off-Broadway show in New York City.
In high school, I was literally performing off-Broadway.
These passions and experiences shaped who I am today.
If you’re reading this, you’re likely a thought leader, social impact founder, or diverse entreprenuer.
If so, it’s safe to assume that you likely stand out in some meaningful way.
Embrace your passions; this is the very characteristic that’ll make you a perfect “product market fit” for your audience.

Whether through professional networks, social media groups, or local community organizations, building a support system can provide encouragement and validation.
You are not alone, and there is immense power in finding your tribe.
As I grew, I understood the importance of finding your tribe, even when it doesn’t look the way you anticipated.
Your community can uplift and inspire you in ways you never imagined.
