Who Are You Voting For This Year?
Casting Votes for Your Future Self: Transforming Daily Choices into Personal Growth | I Am What an Intellectual Property Attorney Looks Like.
It’s election season. Time to get serious.
And no, I am not talking about Biden vs. Trump.
But you verses you.
Every decision we make is like casting a vote for the person we want to become.
This powerful concept, highlighted in James Clear’s book Atomic Habits, really resonates with me.
I remember reading it for the first time and realizing how every small action, no matter how insignificant it seems, is a step towards our future self.
It got me thinking deeply about my choices and how they shape my identity.
So for this Founders’ Letter, we’ll chat about how our daily choices and in the moment “votes” shape our future selves.

James Clear emphasizes that each action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become.
When you make choices that align with your higher self, you’re reinforcing the identity you aspire to.
Conversely, actions that don’t align with your goals are votes against your best self.
This simple yet profound idea can transform how we approach daily habits and long-term goals, as long as you remember these three key things:
On your path to personal growth, it’s crucial to remember that perfection is not the goal.
Some days will be better than others, and that’s okay.
When you accept that not every day will be flawless, you free yourself from the pressure of constant perfection.
This mindset shift allows you to stay committed to your journey, even when you stumble.
For me, it’s hard not to get down on myself when I don’t successful “close” a legal matter, despite having a 95% win rate at the USPTO. But so long as there is breath in my body, therein lies purpose.
So I’ll keep going.
Because the battle is not over.
Surround yourself with individuals who are also striving to be their best selves.
Your environment and the people in it have a significant impact on your habits and mindset.
When you’re in the company of like-minded people who share your goals and values, you create a supportive network that encourages growth and positivity.
For example, some of my favorite folks include other intellectual property attorneys, business system consultants (like my friend Krystal Clark above), and seven figure moguls who have done the work to shift their money mindeset.
I hang with these people because I hope some of their magic rubs off on me.
And it does, many of my best trademark, copyright, and licensing clients came from my friends.
So remember, together, you can inspire and hold each other accountable, making the journey more enjoyable and fulfilling.
Perhaps the most important tip is to give yourself grace.
Understand that growth is a process, and it’s okay to make mistakes along the way.
When you extend grace to yourself, you build resilience and the ability to bounce back from setbacks.
On days when my to-do list rivals that of a CVS receipt, I ask myself, “what exactly needs to be done today, and what can be delegated?”
This question has saved me numerous hours of stress and anxiety; it’s allowed me to remember I am human, and that I am more than an attorney for thought leaders.
I am a fully realized being deserving of grace and rest.
This compassionate approach helps you maintain a positive outlook and keeps you motivated to continue casting votes for your higher self.
In the end, the person you become is a direct result of the choices you make every day.
By acknowledging that perfection is unattainable, surrounding yourself with a supportive community, and showing yourself grace, you can consistently vote for the person you aspire to be.
Embrace the journey of becoming your best self with intentional actions and mindful decisions.
