I have a trademark...now what?
It's not uncommon for our social impact clients to ask this question about what they can do with a brand they now own.
It makes sense; while successfully obtaining a trademark is admirable, it's not, for most founders and business owners, the end in and of itself.
Monetizing and scaling social impact is...
So here are three ways to leverage your intellectual property for revenue generating social impact:
In a "train the trainer" license, a company licenses its proprietary training program or materials to another party, who then trains their own staff or clients using the licensed content.
If, for instance, you have a training course on incorporating principles of equity and fairness into non-profit management and leadership, a "train the trainer" license may be a great way to help organizations train their team while compensating you for your expertise through royalties.
This type of agreement allows a company to license its trademark and course materials to another party who, upon completion of the program and meeting specific requirements, can provide certification to their clients.
Certification licenses are great for social impact organizations who espouse or create a "standard" in their industry and would like to train others in adopting the same standards (such as a social entrepreneurship certification, or an environmental sustainability certification).
3. Licensing for Online Platforms
A company can license its trademark and content to online learning platforms or subscription services, allowing the platform's users to access the company's courses, books, or coaching materials.
This type of agreement allows the company to reach a wider audience and generate revenue through royalties or licensing fees.
At Firm for the Culture, we believe Trademarks are a powerful tool to protect the dynamic contributions you’re making to your community.
But for us, Trademarks are not an end it and of itself; instead, they’re a means to protect your brand, monetize your brand, and scale your social impact.
.
So if you were wondering how social impact and IP intersect, consider any of the above methods as powerful ways to scale your impact efforts.
.
So we’d love to hear from you, fam…which licensing style best suits you? Vote below…
